The three “F”s….family, friends and football. These elements were at the core of Coach Scott Bostwick’s life.
Among the many stories, successes and symbols that represented Coach Bostwick was the red hat…an image that is forever linked with Bearcat football. It was this red hat that was a staple on the Bearcat sidelines for many years and a symbol of a dominant defense that remains true today.
Coach Bostwick came to Maryville after a successful stint as a defensive coordinator at Western Washington University. He would return to the Midwest, close to his native Nebraska, and build a potent Bearcat defense during a nearly two decade run as the leader of that side of the ball.
Throughout his 17-year tenure, the Bearcats would capture 12 MIAA titles and a berth in the national title game on seven occasions, which ended in a national championship three times.
The list of team and individual accomplishments during his run is astonishing. Bearcat defenders accounted for 83 All-MIAA honors during his tenure, 20 were selected to All-America teams and 6 players earned MIAA Defensive Player of the Year honors. In 2007, he was recognized as the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year for all of Division II.
On December 31, 2010 he was named the 18th head coach of the Bearcats. Although he would pass prior to his opportunity to coach an official game as the leader of the Bearcats, his impact on the football program and athletic department remains a powerful influence still today – Scott Bostwick will always be synonymous with a dominant defense and Bearcat football success.
