Answering the question of how an athlete would have competed against those before or after her can be a difficult in most sports. In the case of track and field though, the measurements of distance and time make this a somewhat easier task. With that background, it is safe to say that Julie Humphreys truly was an all-time great in multiple throwing events with marks that have definitely stood the test of time.
Â
The Odell, Nebraska native still remains in the top four all-time of the track and field record book in five different events including indoor shot put and weight throw and outdoor events: hammer throw, discus and shot put. Julie wasn’t just recording distances in the Bearcat record books in the mid-1990s, she also set multiple stadium records at venues throughout the region during her time.
Â
Six times she earned All-American honors at the national meet, registering those accolades in three of her four years. In fact, she had a three year stretch as an all-American at the outdoor meet in discus.
Â
Even though track is a highly individualized sport, there are team aspects to it as well. Julie was a key figure in a remarkable stretch of success by the Bearcat women’s track & field team that saw the team capture indoor and outdoor team titles in 1997 and 1998.
