Northwest Missouri State M-Club Hall of Fame
Sandy Cummings Henshaw established herself as one of the greatest women’s basketball players in Bearcat history in the late 1980s and early 1990s with a strong defensive presence and a well-rounded offensive attack. This first team All-MIAA performer possessed great instincts and a knack for taking the ball away from the opponent – leading the team in steals all four seasons. During her career under the late Wayne Winstead, her teams never had a losing season and compiled 71 total victories.
Sandy was a nightmare for opposing offenses that faced the Bearcats. Having a mindset of disrupting the opponents’ offense, Sandy is still today the MIAA’s all-time leader in career steals with an astonishing 406 throughout her tenure. Included in this impressive total is a single season record of 120 in 1989-90. And make no mistake, Sandy didn’t expend all of her energy on the defensive end of the floor. She was also a consistent offensive weapon for the Bearcats. Her unselfish play accounted for 598 career assists, a mark that leaves her 2nd all-time in the Northwest record books. In addition, her 1,234 points have her at number 14 on the all-time scoring list.
Sandy’s family has had a profound effect on Northwest, as she was one of five sisters to all compete in athletics for the green and white.
Today, Sandy lives in Smithville, Missouri.
