The title of National Champion represents being at your finest when it matters most. Ken Onuaguluchi reached that pinnacle in the outdoor championships in the discus in 1989, etching his place in the Bearcat track and field record books as one of only seven individuals to capture a National title in the sport.
Â
But, make no mistake, Ken did not just have one remarkable day in the Spring of ‘89, he had a career full of great days on his way to being one of the most decorated athletes in Bearcat history. A nine-time All-American in four different events, he would register multiple top three finishes at the national meet, leading to Ken’s spot as one of the best throwers in the country during his time.Â
                                                                Â
While his accolades at the national level are impressive, he took his place on the medal stand numerous times during regular season meets and the MIAA championships as well. In fact, his performance as the overall top point scorer at the 1991 MIAA outdoor championships was instrumental in nearly securing a team conference title for the Bearcat men. His 26 points accounted for over 20% of the Bearcat men team total during that meet.
Â
Nearly 30 years later, he still appears on the Northwest top ten lists for discus and shot put.
