ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball squad secured a 71-65 triumph over the St. Cloud State University Huskies Friday in the Hillyard Classic at the MWSU Fieldhouse.

The Bearcats improved to 2-1 as the Huskies fell to 0-1.

Northwest Missouri State initiated the first half with a 3-pointer by Royce Williams just nine seconds into play, setting an early tone. The home team maintained momentum with strong performances from Trey Moala, who scored multiple layups, and Jack Ratigan, who contributed defensively with rebounds and a block. As the half progressed, Matthew Mayes added crucial points, including a 3-pointer at 3:17, extending the lead. The Huskies kept the contest competitive, closing the gap with free throws and fast break opportunities. However, Northwest Missouri State closed the half firmly ahead, leading 43–34.

Northwest Missouri State maintained their edge against SCSU with a strong sequence in the second half. Aiden Gair's 3-pointer at 18:25, assisted by Presley Ibeh, initiated a key stretch that helped build a lead. Williams contributed with a defensive rebound followed by a fast-break dunk from Ratigan, assisted by Gair, extending the advantage to 52-41 at 16:35.

Despite the Huskies' attempts to close the gap, Northwest Missouri State's consistent free-throw shooting in the final seconds, led by Williams, secured a 71-65 victory as the game concluded.

Mayes scored 14 points and collected seven rebounds, while also recording two steals. Williams posted 16 points, converting 5 of 5 from the free-throw line and adding four rebounds.
