Northwest men move to 3-1 with 85-72 dispatching of Augustana

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball team captured its third straight win by discarding the Augustana Vikings Saturday afternoon at the Hillyard Classic held at the MWSU Fieldhouse. 

The Bearcat bench contributed significantly with 43 points, helping to maintain their lead throughout the game.

Northwest Missouri State opened the first half with a strong offensive performance, highlighted by Aiden Gair's consecutive 3-pointers at 13:38 and 13:14, helping to establish an early lead. The team showed efficiency from the free-throw line, converting all 12 attempts, and out-rebounded Augustana 18-17, contributing to their control of the game. By the end of the half, Northwest Missouri State led 48-33.

Northwest Missouri State maintained momentum with a sharp offensive performance in the second half, starting with Gair's jumper at 19:11 to keep the lead at 50–35. The visiting team capitalized on their shooting efficiency, including a key 3-pointer by Gair at 17:58, assisted by Jack Ratigan, to extend their advantage to 53–40. Despite Augustana's efforts to close the gap, Matthew Mayes' layup at 3:17, assisted by Ratigan, reinforced Northwest Missouri State's control, leading to a 37–39 half. The game concluded with Northwest Missouri State securing an 85–72 victory.

Gair scored 20 points, including four 3-pointers, and recorded two steals, leading the offensive effort. Robert Garcia added 16 points with three 3-pointers while maintaining an efficient 6-for-8 shooting performance. Mayes contributed 15 points and dished out two assists, providing additional scoring depth. Ratigan facilitated the offense with six assists, playing a key role in ball distribution.

Looking ahead, the Bearcats will face Missouri Valley at home on Monday, Nov. 17. The game is set for 6 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.
