MARYVILLE, Mo. - Washburn University's Tyler Nelson drilled a three-pointer with :00.3 left to lift the Ichabods to a 60-59 win over the Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball team at Bearcat Arena.
It is the third straight win for the Ichabods on Bearcat Arena dating back the past two seasons.
Washburn improved to 17-9 overall and 14-6 in MIAA play. Northwest fell to 23-4 overall and 16-3 in league play.
Washburn's Tyler Geiman scored a game-high 21 points that included 16 first-half points. Geiman was the only Ichabod to play all 40 minutes and he dished out three assists. Geiman went 9-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Nelson posted nine points on 3-of-11 shooting, including the game-winner.
Northwest's
Luke Waters scored 14 of his 17 points in the first-half. Waters went 6-of-11 from the floor. Waters knocked in a team-best four three-pointers.
Northwest bounced out to a 15-6 lead with 10:56 to play in the first half. Washburn responded with a 10-0 run to take a 16-15 lead with 7:42 to play in the opening half. The squad would go to the locker rooms knotted at 31-31.
Waters began the second half with his only field goal of the half as he dropped in a three-pointer to lift Northwest to a 34-31 lead. After the game was tied at 39-39, Washburn edged out to a four-point advantage at 46-42 following a Nelson three-pointer with 9:34 remaining in the game. But a quick 8-0 spurt from the Bearcats that included a triple from
Wes Dreamer, a banked three-pointer by
Trevor Hudgins and a
Byron Alexander layup gave Northwest a 50-46 lead with 6:51 to play.
Nelson buried his second three-pointer of the game to trim the lead back to one at 50-49 with 6:17 to play. Hudgins was fouled shooting a three-pointer and sank all three free throws to put Northwest back up four.
A Geiman three-pointer and a layup from Connor Deffenbaugh lifted the Ichabods back into the lead at 54-53 with 3:44 on the clock. Dreamer knocked in a pair of free throws to put the lead back in Northwest's favor with 3:17 to play.
The lead would see-saw again with Deffenbaugh scoring on a layup and Hudgins making a twisting left-handed layup in traffic with 2:21 to play. Washburn's Jonny Clausing drew a foul but could only split a pair at the line to even the matchup at 57-57 with 2:07 remaining.
Hudgins drew Deffenbaugh's fourth foul with 1:41 to play and the Bearcat point guard drained both to score the final points of the game for Northwest.
Diego Bernard took over defensively on the next two possessions as he tallied a steal and a blocked shot to stymie both of Washburn's scoring opportunities. Northwest could not take advantage on its end of the floor as Hudgins committed a turnover and Dreamer missed a short jumper with :14 left. Clausing grabbed the Dreamer miss and the Ichabods pushed the ball up the floor. After swinging it around from right to left, Deffenbaugh found Nelson open on the left wing and Nelson rose up and buried the three-pointer with :00.3 on the clock to clinch the Ichabod road win, 60-59.
