MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Emporia State University Hornets came into Bearcat Arena and delivered the No. 7-ranked Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat men's basketball team its second straight loss, 76-75.
The Hornets (19-7, 14-6 MIAA) rode a 25-point night from Brendan Van Dyke to secure its second win over Northwest (23-5, 16-4 MIAA) this season.
The Bearcats got 24 points from
Trevor Hudgins in a losing effort. Hudgins knocked in 6-of-14 three-pointers.
The matchup featured 16 ties and 19 lead changes. The final 23 minutes of the contest neither squad would lead by more than four points. Northwest's largest lead of the game came at eight points (17-9 with 14:51 to play in the first half) and ESU's largest lead was six (34-28 with 3:44 to play in the first half).
Both squads shot better than 50.0% from the floor with Northwest at 51.1% (24-of-47) and ESU at 50.0% (23-of-46). Northwest knocked in 11 three-pointers and ESU drained nine from deep.
Northwest will be back in action Wednesday at Nebraska-Kearney. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
NOTES: It's the first time since the 2010-11 season that Northwest has lost back-to-back home games ... Northwest lost five straight home games from Jan. 17, 2011 to Feb. 3, 2011 to Central Missouri (L, 81-68), Missouri Southern (L, 91-79), Emporia State (L, 74-62), Washburn (L, 71-55) and Nebraska-Omaha (L, 64-56) ... ESU's Tray Buchanan entered the game leading the nation in scoring at 26.7 points per game and was limited to a season-low 11 points with five of those coming at the free throw line ... it was only the fifth time this season Buchanan failed to reach 20 points ... Hudgins produced his 70th career 20-point scoring game with 24 points ... he has scored in double figures in 70 straight games and in 121 of his 128 collegiate games ... Hudgins clocked in his 44th career 40-minute games ...
Daniel Abreu scored 11 points off the bench to reach double figures for the 10th time in his career.
