Bearcats dismiss Gorillas, 74-64

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The No. 2-ranked Northwest Missouri State University secured a 10-point win over the Pittsburg State University Gorillas Monday at Bearcat Arena.

The Bearcats won their 22nd straight MIAA contest and moved to 13-1 on the season. Northwest is a perfect 6-0 in MIAA play. Pittsburg State fell to 4-10 overall and 3-5 in league play.

Northwest improved its overall win streak to 11 in a row as four Bearcats reached double-figure scoring. Diego Bernard and Trevor Hudgins led the way with 18 points apiece. Wes Dreamer tacked on 12 points, while Luke Waters tallied 11 points. Dreamer grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

Northwest led by as many as 26 points in the second half, before the Gorillas paired it down to 10 points at the buzzer. 

Bernard dropped in a three-pointer as Northwest built an early 9-2 lead. PSU battled back and evened the game at 16-16 with 8:36i to play in the half. PSU eventually took a 29-27 lead with 1:55 left in the half. However, Hudgins hit a step back jumper in the lane and then drained two free throws to give Northwest a 31-29 lead at the break.

Northwest turned the game into a rout with a 25-3 spurt. PSU's Cameron Huefner hit a three-pointer to cut the Northwest lead to 43-40 with 15:13 to play in the game. Northwest then allowed one made field goal by Pittsburg State over the next nine minutes in building a 68-43 advantage. Daniel Abreu knocked in a three-pointer with 5:19 to play that gave Northwest its largest lead of the game at 26 points with a 71-45 lead.

PSU closed the contest on a 19-3 spurt as Northwest secured a 74-64 triumph.

Northwest will return to action Thursday against the Washburn Ichabods. Northwest will travel to Topeka, Kan., for a 7:30 p.m. tilt at Lee Arena.

NOTES: Northwest has defeated Pittsburg State in 13 straight matchups ... PSU has dropped 14 consecutive games in Bearcat Arena ... head coach Ben McCollum picked up his 313th career win, which ranks No. 7 on the MIAA all-time wins list ...
