Austin completes sweep of 400m dash at MIAA Indoor and Outdoor Championship

The Northwest Missouri State University track and field squad completed action Sunday at the 2019 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The men placed fifth with 77 points, while the women finished sixth with 53 points.

Bearcat freshman Omar Austin captured the 400-meter dash title with time of :47.18. Austin also won the 400-meter crown at the 2019 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships giving him a pair of 400 meter conference victories.
 
Both 4x100m relay teams placed in the top three was a strong start for the Bearcats. The women's 4x100 team of Jordan Hammond, Hiba Mahgoub, Aliyah Lee, and Mercedes Isaacson-Cover placed third with a time of :46.50. The men's 4x100m relay team of Caelon Harkey, Peyton Mizera, Marcus Klein, and Omar Austin placed second with a provisionally qualifying time of :41.06. The 4x400 teams closed strong for the Bearcats as well, the women's team of Isaacson-Cover, Moe Bianchi, Mahgoub, and Hammond placed second with a provisionally qualifying time of 3:46.17. The men's team of Harkey, Kevin Schultz, Dallas Steiner and Austin placed third with a provisionally qualifying time of 3:12.89.
 
Isaacson-Cover secured a third-place finish in the triple jump, with a provisionally qualifying jump of 40'4.75" which puts her at No. 12 in the nation, and gives her a new Northwest record. Jordan Hammond placed fourth in the 100m hurdles with a provisionally qualifying time of :13.99. Hiba Mahgoub placed sixth in the 400m dash with a provisionally qualifying time of :55.92. Hammond also placed second in the 400m hurdles with a provisionally qualifying time of :59.17. Mahgoub also placed sixth in the 200m dash with a time of :24.37.
 
Dakota Schmidt placed eighth in javelin with a throw of 184'4" Jake Norris placed fourth in the 1500 run with a time of 3:54.55.  After aggravating his knee while qualifying for the finals in the 110m hurdles yesterday, Emmai Brown showed a lot of toughness and powered through the injury to secure a point for the Bearcats in the event. Abdelrahim Mahgoub placed fifth in the 800m run with a time of 1:53.78. Seth Shurvington placed fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of :54.38. Austin placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of :21.39 and Harkey placed sixth with a time of :21.72.
 
The Bearcats will compete next at the Sam Williams Twilight Qualifier in Emporia, Kansas, on Sat., May 11.
