Atkins shakes record books in St. Louis; Throwers compete at ESU Spring Open

The Northwest Missouri State University outdoor track and field teams competed at the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis, Mo and the ESU Spring Open in Emporia, Kan. on Friday.
 
WASHU DISTANCE CARNIVAL MEET RESULTS
(M) 5000-meter Run: Junior Drew Atkins captured the event crown with a Division II provisional time of 13:40.86. Atkins time broke the school record in the men's 5,000-meter run, broke the Francis Stadium facility record, and set a new personal best. 
 
ESU SPRING OPEN MEET RESULTS
(M) Shot Put: Sophomore Demarii Williams secured 10th place overall with a new personal best of 16.25m (53-03.75) – earning him the tenth-farthest men's shot put in school history. 
 
Unattached freshmen Ethan Gaschler and Tyrus Smith claimed sixth and eighth place respectively. Gaschler had a throw of 17.10m (56-01.25) and Smith had a throw of 16.57m (54-04.50) which would have earned them the seventh and ninth-farthest men's shot put in Northwest's history had they been attached. 
 
(M) Discus Throw: Demarii Williams had a throw of 43.55m (142-10) earning him 16th out of 41 competitors. 
 
Unattached freshman Ethan Gaschler captured the men discus throw title with a throw of 52.70m (172-10). Had Gaschler been an attached competitor he would've secured the sixth-farthest discus throw in school history. 
 
(W) Discus Throw: Freshman Jordyn Matiyow placed 20th overall with a throw of 35.51m (116-06).
 
(M) Hammer Throw: With a throw of 56.05m (183-10), Josh Shelly took claimed seventh place, setting a new personal best, and set the new third-farthest men's hammer throw in school history.
 
Unattached freshmen Dustin Wurtz and Tyrus Smith claimed eighth and 10th place respectively. Wurtz had a throw of 55.56m (182-03) and Smith had a throw of 52.29m (171-06) which would have earned them the sixth and seventh-farthest men's hammer throws in Northwest's history had they been attached. 
 
(W) Hammer Throw: Junior Margherita Sala had a throw of 45.29m (148-07) earning her 20th out of 39 competitors. 
 
Up Next:
Northwest track and field squads will travel to compete in the Central Invitational tomorrow, March 28, in Pella, Iowa hosted by Central College. Running events will begin at 12:30 p.m. and field events are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.
