Northwest Missouri State Athletics

WICHITA, Kan. – The Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team prevailed in a 3-1 decision over the Newman University Jets Friday afternoon at Wilkins Field.
 
The victory snapped a seven-match winless streak for the Bearcats. Northwest is 1-6-1 and 1-2-0 in MIAA play. Newman is 0-7-2 overall and 0-3-0 in league action.
 
Northwest entered the matching having scored four goals all season and nearly equaled that total with three goals Friday from Jenna Lloyd, Ximena Arnau and Julia Coacher. Lloyd collected her first collegiate goal in her eighth game as a Bearcat. Lloyd's goal came in the first minute of Friday's match was assisted by Coacher. Arnau netted her 12th collegiate goal and second this season with Norah Oyler gaining the assist. Coacher posted her second career goal and second this year as she gave Northwest a 3-0 lead early in the second half. Emily Woelk tallied an assist on Coacher's goal.
 
Newman's Lexi Bauer recorded a goal in the 59th minute to trim the Bearcat lead to 3-1.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Taryn Lewis secured her first collegiate victory as she made five saves.

Jenna Lloyd put Northwest in front 41 seconds into the first half, finishing off an assist from Julia Coacher for a 1-0 lead. Northwest kept pressing early, with Coacher forcing a save at 4:53, earning a corner shortly after and later adding another saved shot before Emma Cook hit the top woodwork in the 14th minute. The Jets generated chances in the middle of the half, but Taryn Lewis made saves in the 17th and 29th minutes as Northwest protected the advantage through a physical stretch. Ximena Arnau added to the lead in the 35th minute off an assist from Norah Oyler, and the Bearcats reached halftime ahead 2-0 after Lewis made another save in the 42nd minute.

Northwest added to its advantage less than three minutes into the second half, as Coacher scored off Emily Woelk's assist at 47:54 to make it 3-0. The goal came during an active opening stretch in which Arnau and Mackenzie Jordan had early shots saved, and Northwest followed with chances from Lilly Gibler, Lillie Shaw, Sadie Lilienthal and Arnau before the 58th minute. The Jets answered at 58:44 on Lexi Bauer's goal from Emma Kolbe to make it 3-1, but Northwest immediately continued forward with a Jordan shot saved, a Maddie Gemeinhardt attempt and three corners between 59:14 and 62:49. Lewis made second-half saves at 70:11 and 79:04, and Northwest added four more shots from the 79th through 86th minutes before closing out the 3-1 result.
 
Head coach Marc Gordon picked up his 60th win at the helm of the Bearcat soccer program. Gordon has accumulated 173 career wins in 17 seasons as a collegiate women's soccer coach.
 
Northwest is 9-2-1 all-time vs. Newman. Northwest has knocked off Newman six straight times.
 
Northwest will travel to Topeka, Kan., for a 1 p.m. Sunday matchup against No. 25-ranked Washburn.
