EDMOND, Okla. — The University of Central Oklahoma netted two second-half goals to record a 2-1 victory over the visiting Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team on Sunday at Tom Thompson Field.
The Bronchos improved to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in MIAA play. Northwest is 0-6-1 overall and 0-2-0 in league action.
Junior
Julia Coacher scored her first career goal in the first half to give Northwest a 1-0 advantage.
Mallory Arehart was credited with an assist on the Coacher goal.
Coacher gave Northwest the first-half breakthrough at 41:47, finishing off
Mallory Arehart's assist to put the visitors ahead 1-0. Earlier, Northwest absorbed UCO's early pressure, with
Leyah Scott making saves in the eighth, 17th and 28th minutes while the Bronchos earned four corner kicks before halftime. Northwest also created chances through
Mackenzie Jordan,
Lillie Shaw and
Lydia McVey before the goal, with Shaw and McVey forcing saves. After Coacher's goal and a
Brooke Bellehumeur yellow card, Northwest added a corner kick and another Coacher shot before taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Northwest was put under pressure immediately in the second half, as UCO scored through Jane Lockhart in the 47th minute and Dannae Gutierrez in the 49th to move ahead 2-1. Scott helped keep Northwest within that scoreline, saving shots from Sami Allen, Jordan Hahn, Caleah Carter, Megan Wilson and others during extended Bronchos pressure. Northwest pushed back after the 74th minute, earning four corner kicks and getting shots from
Addy Armstrong and
Sophia Heinert during its best attacking stretch of the half. Armstrong put another shot on frame in the 84th minute, but Maddie Ortwein saved it, and the half ended with Northwest on the short end of a 2-1 decision.
Coacher scored Northwest's goal and finished with two shots, including one on frame. Arehart recorded an assist. Scott played all 90 minutes in goal and made nine saves.
Up next, Northwest will travel to Wichita, Kan., to face Newman on Friday, Sept. 25, at 3 p.m.
