MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Northeastern State University Riverhawks used two second-half goals to register a 2-1 victory over the Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team in the MIAA opener for both programs at the Bearcat Pitch.
Northwest finished with 24 shots, including 11 on goal, while holding NSU to 10 shots and four on goal.
Northwest pressed for the breakthrough late in the first half, generating six shots and two corner kicks from 29:29 to 39:29 while the match remained 0-0. Earlier,
Addy Armstrong and
Lillie Shaw gave Northwest early looks, and Juliette Langlet saved back-to-back shots from Shaw and Armstrong during a busy first-half stretch. Northwest also got through an NSU spell that included two corners and multiple shots between the 18th and 29th minutes without conceding.
Sadie Lilienthal and
Rachel Davis each put shots on frame during Northwest Mo. St.'s late pressure, but the half ended scoreless.
Mackenzie Jordan answered NSU's 51st-minute goal less than two minutes later, scoring at 52:45 to bring Northwest level at 1-1. Earlier in the half, the Bearcats had earned a corner kick and a saved
Lydia McVey shot before NSU went ahead, then continued to create chances with attempts from
Izzie Miller, Shaw and
Julia Coacher around another corner.
Taryn Lewis made a save in the 74th minute, but the RiverHawks scored at 76:50 to move back in front, 2-1. Northwest pushed through the final stretch with saved shots from Lilienthal,
Ximena Arnau and McVey, plus additional attempts by Jordan and
Lilly Gibler, but the half ended with NSU holding the 2-1 final score.
Jordan scored an unassisted goal and finished with three shots. Armstrong tied for the team lead with four shots and put two on goal. Lilienthal also recorded four shots, including two on frame. Lewis played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.
Up next, Northwest will travel to Central Oklahoma at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, in Edmond, Okla.
