MARYVILLE, Mo. — The No. 14-ranked Pittsburg State Gorillas registered a 3-0 shutout of the Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team in a non-conference matchup at the Bearcat Pitch.
Pittsburg State improved to 6-0-0 on the season. The Gorillas have scored 19 goals and have not allowed an opponent to score this year. Northwest is 0-4-1 overall.
Northwest spent much of the first half defending a deficit after Pittsburg St. scored at 7:35 and again at 30:27. Earlier, Pittsburg St. committed fouls at 4:19 and 6:55 before Danae Hobson put the visitors ahead, while Northwest Mo. St. was whistled for its first foul at 15:11. The middle of the half grew more physical with four fouls between 23:07 and 28:01, and Macy Malik later scored off Avianna Gonzalez's assist to make it 2-0.
Leyah Scott held the score there during a late Pittsburg St. push, making saves on Ella Cazzavillan at 36:24 and Ann Boehnlein at 39:24 as Northwest faced two corner kicks and five shots from 35:33 to 44:18. Pitt State led 2-0 at the break.
Northwest conceded the only goal of the second half at 61:09, when Piper Hughes scored for Pittsburg St. off an assist from Danae Hobson to make it 3-0. Earlier,
Lillie Shaw put a shot wide right at 47:34, and
Taryn Lewis kept the margin from growing with a save on Rose Harden's shot at 53:14. Northwest then played through a physical stretch with fouls on
Ximena Arnau,
Sophia Heinert and
Jenna Lloyd before absorbing three Pittsburg St. corner kicks and a shot from Ella Cazzavillan between 66:11 and 77:50 without allowing another goal. Pittsburg St. added one more shot in the 81st minute, while Northwest was called offside at 87:02.
Scott started in goal and made two saves in 45 minutes. Lewis added one save while also playing 45 minutes. Shaw recorded Northwest's lone shot.
