BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji State University Beavers recorded a narrow 2-1 victory over the visiting Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Chet Anderson Stadium.
The Bearcats managed 14 shots, five of which were on goal, but could not overcome the two goals scored by the Beavers.
The opening period began with Northwest quickly finding its rhythm, though BSU was first to strike. Ella Wade converted a penalty kick in the 3rd minute, giving the home team an early lead. Northwest responded strategically, maintaining pressure and drawing a foul in the penalty area.
Ximena Arnau capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a penalty kick in the 10th minute to level the match.
Northwest continued to press forward, with
Leyah Scott making critical saves to keep the game tied. The visitors generated several scoring opportunities, including a shot by
Lillie Shaw that was saved by Rozlyn Buettner. As the period progressed, both teams exchanged chances, but neither could break the deadlock. The first half concluded with the score tied at 1–1.
The second period began with the Beavers taking an early lead as Madeline Davey scored at 45:44, giving them a 2-1 advantage. Northwest responded with offensive efforts, including shots from Arnau and
Rachel Davis, both saved by Rozlyn Buettner. Despite consistent pressure and multiple attempts by
Emma Cook and
Julia Coacher, the visitors were unable to find the back of the net.
As the period progressed, Northwest continued to press with shots from
Norah Oyler and
Makenna West, but accuracy eluded them. The team's defensive work, highlighted by Scott's saves, kept the margin at a single goal.
Leyah Scott made six saves, facing 13 shots on goal throughout the match.
Ximena Arnau scored once, adding to her tally with one of her three shots finding the back of the net.
Julia Coacher took three shots, with one being on target.
Makenna West also contributed offensively with three shots during the game.
Northwest will host Maryville on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 5 p.m. in Maryville, Mo., in the first home regular season match of the season.
