ABERDEEN, S.D. — The Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback in its 2026 season opener at Northern State Friday at Athletic & Recreation Fields.
The Bearcats' defense kept the game close with six saves, but a second-half goal from Northern State secured the win for the home team.
The first period began with Northwest Missouri State's defense being tested early by Northern State. Bearcat goalkeeper
Taryn Lewis made critical saves in the 12th and 17th minutes to thwart attempts from Lauren Carpenter and Chloe Voss. Despite conceding several corners, the defensive unit maintained composure under pressure.
On the offensive side, the Bearcats struggled to find rhythm, with three offside calls disrupting their flow.
Lillie Shaw managed a shot on goal in the 26th minute, but it was saved by Audrey Burns. The period concluded with neither team finding the back of the net, keeping the score locked at 0-0.
The second period saw Northwest push forward in search of an equalizer, with
Makenna West taking multiple shots, one of which was saved by Northern State's goalkeeper, Audrey Burns. Despite Northwest's efforts, Northern State capitalized on a corner kick opportunity at 73:44, with Ella Johnson scoring to break the deadlock.
Lewis delivered key saves to keep the contest within reach for the Bearcats. However, despite a late push that included a corner kick and additional attempts on goal by
Rachel Davis and
Emma Cook, Northwest was unable to find the back of the net. The period concluded with Northern State maintaining a 1-0 lead at the final whistle.
Lewis made six saves, keeping the Bearcats competitive throughout the match. West was active on the offensive end, leading the team with three shots and placing one on goal. Cook contributed defensively, also managing to put her single shot on target. Shaw added pressure in the attack, recording one shot and placing it on goal.
Northwest will travel to Bemidji, Minn., for a match against Bemidji State on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m.
