Northwest wins sixth straight after 6-2 triumph at Newman

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The No. 28-ranked Northwest Missouri State University baseball team moved its winning streak to six in a row with a 6-2 victory Saturday over the Newman Jets at Equity Bank Park.

The Bearcats moved their season mark to 33-13 overall and 23-9 in MIAA play. The Jets fell to 5-40 overall and 2-29 in league action. The Jets have lost 21 straight MIAA games this season.

Northwest's 23 MIAA wins are the second-most in program history trailing only the MIAA-championship winning squad of 2018 that went 25-11 in league action.

Northwest capitalized on a three-run fifth inning and recorded 10 strikeouts, holding the Jets to two runs.

Northwest took the lead in the second inning. Sam Wornson walked and scored when John Connors tripled to center field. Connors then scored on Michael Good's groundout, giving the team a 2–0 advantage after two innings.

In the third inning, Frank Gall walked, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Jordi Ventura's sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 3–0.

The fifth inning saw Northwest expand its lead further. Ventura singled and advanced on a wild pitch, then scored on Wilmer Jimenez's RBI single. Wornson followed with a two-run homer to left field, pushing the lead to 6–0 after five innings.

Newman responded in the sixth inning with a solo home run by Collin Morris, making it 6–1. They added another run in the seventh with a homer by Justin Birch, narrowing the gap to 6–2.

The Bearcats bullpen did not allow a run in the eight or ninth innings as they secured a four-run victory.

Logan Brasel (3-2) delivered a strong performance pitching 6 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and no walks, while allowing two earned runs on five hits. Dylan McIntyre contributed by pitching 2/3 of an inning, allowing one hit and recording one strikeout. Gage Busby and Noah Williams each pitched one inning, with Busby allowing one hit and hitting a batter, while Williams also surrendered one hit. The pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts.

Wornson led the offense with two runs and two RBIs, including a home run. Brasel was effective on the mound, striking out eight over 6 1/3 innings while allowing two earned runs. Connors contributed with a triple, recording one run and one RBI. Jimenez added to the scoring with one hit, one run, and one RBI.

The Bearcats and Jets will close out the three-game series Sunday at noon.
