WICHITA, Kan. - The No. 28-ranked Northwest Missouri State University baseball team belted the Newman Jets, 17-11, in completing a series sweep at Equity Bank Park.
The Bearcats moved their winning streak to seven in a row and pulled to within one game of first place in the
MIAA standings. Northwest is 34-13 overall and 24-9 in MIAA play. The Jets fell to 5-41 overall and 2-30 in league action. The Jets have lost 21 consecutive MIAA games.
Northwest faced an early challenge as the Jets plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning, aided by an error and a two-RBI double by Anthony Cannavino.
Frank Gall doubled for Northwest and scored on a single by
Jordi Ventura to put Northwest on the board, ending the inning with a 4-1 deficit.
In the fourth inning, Northwest rallied to tie the game.
Wilmer Jimenez singled and later scored on
Michael Good's two-RBI single, which was compounded by an error. A sacrifice fly by
Chester Brooks brought home another run, leveling the score at 4-4.
The fifth inning proved pivotal for Northwest as it scored five runs.
Sam Wornson's two-RBI double and a hit-by-pitch RBI by Brooks extended the lead.
Jeremiah Cabuyaban added a two-RBI single to cap off the inning, giving Northwest a 9-5 advantage.
Northwest continued to extend its lead in the sixth inning. A sacrifice fly by
Parker Griffith and another by Good added three more runs, pushing the score to 12-6.
Cabuyaban homered in the seventh off the scoreboard in left field to make it 13-6 in favor of Northwest. It was his team-leading 14th home run of the season.
In the eighth inning, Northwest capitalized on a double by Cabuyaban and an RBI double by Ventura to score three more runs, increasing the lead to 16-9.
The Jets managed to score twice in the ninth inning, but Northwest Mo. St. maintained its lead. Brooks scored on a sacrifice fly by Ventura, concluding the inning with a score of 17-11.
Micah Diamond pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and one walk, but did not concede any earned runs.
Landon Wells came in relief, also pitching 3 1/3 innings, striking out three batters while allowing two earned runs on seven hits, and earning the win to improve his record to 4-2.
Bronco Whitt struggled in his inning of work, giving up three earned runs on two homers while walking two.
Nick Brubeck and
Leonardo May combined for an inning of relief, with Brubeck allowing two runs on three hits, and May closing with 2/3 inning, throwing five strikes out of six pitches.
Cabuyaban recorded an impressive performance, hitting a home run, driving in five runs, and scoring twice. Gall tallied three hits, including two doubles, and crossed the plate twice. Ventura contributed with three RBIs and two hits, including a double. Wornson scored three runs and added three RBIs, further bolstering the team's offensive efforts.
Northwest will close the out the regular season at home with a three-game MIAA series vs. Central Oklahoma beginning Thursday at Bearcat Field.

Northwest is 8-2 in MIAA series this year. The Bearcats picked up MIAA series wins over Fort Hays State (2-1), Emporia State (2-1), Missouri Southern (3-0), Washburn (2-1), Pittsburg State (3-0), Arkansas-Fort Smith (3-0), Northeastern State (3-0) and Newman (3-0).
Northwest has swept five MIAA opponents this season (Missouri Southern, Pittsburg State, Arkansas-Fort Smith, Northeastern State, Newman).
Northwest has eclipsed the 30-win mark for the 11th time in program history. Northwest has also registered 23 MIAA wins – only its fifth 20-plus win MIAA season in school history. Northwest's 24 MIAA wins are the second-most in program history trailing only the MIAA-championship winning squad of 2018 that went 25-11 in league action.
