WICHITA, Kan. - The No. 28-ranked Northwest Missouri State University baseball team endured a five-hour, 13-inning marathon and pulled out an 11-10 victory over the Newman Jets at Equity Bank Park.
The Bearcats won their fifth straight game and moved their season record to 32-13 overall and 22-9 in MIAA play. Newman slipped to 5-39 overall and 2-28 in MIAA action. The Jets have lost 20 consecutive MIAA games.
Brock Steggall got the win on the mound to move to 4-0. Steggall worked 4 1/3 innings of relief and struck out three Jet batters. Steggall entered in the ninth inning with runners on first and second with no outs with the Bearcats clinging to a one-run lead. Steggall got the next three batters out, allowing only an RBI groundout to tie the game and force extra innings. He worked scoreless innings in the 10th, 11th and 12th before bowing out in the 13th with one out.
Jeremy Evangelista induced a groundout to second by Carter Andreozzi with the bases loaded and Northwest holding a slim one-run advantage, 11-10. It is the first save of the season for Evangelista.
Bearcat starter
Ben Haug threw 7.0 innings and left with Northwest and Jets tied at 2-2. Haug struck out five and allowed four hits. He was touched up for two earned runs while throwing 118 pitches.
Northwest looked to put the game away in the ninth inning with a four-run rally sparked by
Michael Good getting hit with the bases loaded.
Parker Griffith walked with the bags full to give Northwest a 4-2 lead.
Leonardo May and
Sam Wornson each delivered RBI singles to push the advantage to 6-2.
However, the Jets rallied with a four-spot of their own in the bottom half of the ninth to force extra innings.
Neither team scored until Northwest broke through with a five-run 13th.
Jeremiah Cabuyaban brought home May on a sacrifice bunt for the first run.
Jordi Ventura reached on a fielder's choice that had Gall cross the plate.
John Connors also delivered a sac bunt RBI to plate Cabuyaban for a three-run advantage.
Wilmer Jimenez singled to left as Ventura completed his circuit of the base paths for an 11-7 lead.
Michael Good drove in the final run for Northwest on a single to center that brought in Jimenez for a seemingly comfortable 11-6 lead.
The Jets refused to go quietly and answered with a four-run rally, having the bases loaded with two outs when head coach
Tony Jandron summoned Evangelista for the save opportunity. Evangelista got a ground ball to short that Jimenez scooped up and threw across to Cabuyaban for the final out.
May led the team with three hits and added an RBI while scoring twice.  Gall contributed with two RBI and also scored a run.
Parker Griffith reached base consistently, walking three times, and scored two runs. Jimenez was effective at the plate, collecting two hits and scoring twice. Jimenez has reached base in 25 straight games.
Newman pitchers hit eight Northwest batters. The Bearcats left 21 runners on base.
Northwest and Newman will play game two of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.Â
