MARYVILLE, Mo. - Third baseman
Michael Good slugged a pair of homers to help the Northwest Missouri State University baseball team to a 12-11 victory Tuesday over the Missouri Western Griffons at Bearat Field.
Northwest is 31-13 overall and 21-9 in MIAA play. Missouri Western is 22-21 overall and 15-15 in MIAA play. The Griffons have lost four in a row.
The Bearcats overcame a 3-0 deficit and a 7-3 Griffon lead to take the third game of the season series with the visitors.
Landon Wells got the win as he pitched 4 2/3 of relief ball. Wells scattered six hits and two runs as he struck out three. The MIAA Pitcher of the Week
Ben Haug got the final two outs of the game for his second save of the season.
John Connors posted a four-hit game and drove in three runs to lift the Bearcats to their fourth straight win.
The home team rallied with an eight-run sixth inning, overcoming a four-run deficit to clinch the win.
Northwest faced an early challenge as Missouri Western jumped out to a 3–0 lead in the first inning. Jordan Austin's triple and Miguel Cantu's two-run homer highlighted the frame. Through one inning, the Griffons led 3–0.
In the third inning, Northwest responded with vigor as
Michael Good launched a solo home run.
Frank Gall doubled, setting the stage for
Jordi Ventura's RBI triple.
John Connors followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3–3.
The fourth inning saw the Griffons regain the lead with a four-run display. Ben Waliczek and Micah Kobuszewski contributed to the scoring, pushing the score to 7–3. Northwest managed a run in their half of the inning from a sacrifice fly by Gall, closing the gap to 7–4.
Northwest seized control in the sixth inning, plating eight runs. Good's second homer of the day, Connors' two-run single, and
Parker Griffith's two-RBI double were pivotal. The inning ended with Northwest Mo. St. ahead 12–7.
MoWest chipped away in the eighth, scoring one run due to an error. The score was 12–8.
In the ninth inning, the Griffons mounted a comeback attempt with back-to-back homers from Seth Winkler and Luke Parmentier, part of a three-run surge. However, Northwest Mo. St. held on to secure a 12–11 victory.
Northwest will head to Wichita, Kan. for a three-game weekend series against the Newman Jets beginning Friday.
