MARYVILLE, Mo. - The No. 30-ranked Northwest Missouri State University baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the Northeastern State RiverHawks, shutting them out 4-0 and reaching the 30-win mark for the 11th time in school history.
The Bearcats improved to 30-13 overall and 20-9 in MIAA play. It is the first 30-win season in Maryville since back-to-back 30-victory years in 2017 and 2018. Northeastern State dropped to 13-28 overall and 8-21 in league action.
The Bearcats had eight hits but six of them went for extra bases including a two-run homer in the eight inning from
Austin Marsh. Marsh doubled in the seventh for a two-hit game.
Jordi Ventura laced a pair of doubles for a two-hit game as well.Â
Three Bearcat pitchers combined on a seven-hit shutout.
Bronco Whitt got the start and tossed four scoreless innings. Whitt allowed four hits and struck out three.
Tyson Hilsabeck cruised through four innings of his own by allowing three hits and striking out six. Hilsabeck retired the final eight hitters he saw from the sixth, seventh and eight innings.
Jeremy Evangelista worked the ninth and allowed only a one-out walk to go with a strikeout. Hilsabeck was awarded the win as he moved to 1-1 on the season.
In the third inning,
Michael Good doubled to left center and advanced to third on
Austin Marsh's sacrifice bunt.
Frank Gall then delivered a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Good to score and giving Northwest a 1-0 lead.
Momentum continued in the seventh inning when Marsh doubled to left center and later scored on
Jordi Ventura's double down the right-field line to give Northwest a 2-0 advantage.
The eighth inning saw
Chester Brooks lead off with a single, followed by Marsh's two-run home run to left field, driving in Brooks and widening the lead to 4-0.
Northwest will be back in action Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Missouri Western at the Bearcat Baseball Field.Â
