MARYVILLE, Mo. — The No. 30-ranked Northwest Missouri State University baseball team broke its single-season home run record Sunday en route to a 12-6 victory over the Northeastern State RiverHawks in game two of an MIAA series.
The Bearcats got a three-run homer from
Wilmer Jimenez in a five-run third inning and a two-run blast from
Jeremiah Cabuyaban in the eighth inning to give them 59 home runs on the season. Northwest hammered 57 home runs in 2025 for the previous school mark.
Northwest pounded out 13 hits and used a five-run third inning to pull ahead. The RiverHawks committed four errors as the Bearcats scored double-figures in runs for the 13th time this season.
Northwest is 29-13 overall and 19-9 in MIAA play. NSU is 13-27 overall and 8-20 in league action.
The visitors took an early lead in the second inning when Trout He doubled and later scored, followed by Joseph Perry, who crossed home plate on an error, making it 2-0. However, Northwest Missouri State responded in their half of the inning.
Wilmer Jimenez scored on an error to cut the deficit to one. Through two innings, NSU led 2-1.
The home team seized control in the third inning with a five-run surge.
Jordi Ventura singled to bring
Frank Gall home, followed by
John Connors' RBI single scoring
Jeremiah Cabuyaban. Jimenez then powered a three-run homer, extending Northwest Missouri State's lead to 6-2.
In the fourth, Connors doubled, driving in two runs after Ventura's single had brought in Gall. This extended the advantage to 9-4, despite NSU adding two runs in the top half.
The sixth inning saw Gall double and later score on Ventura's single, furthering the lead to 10-5. NSU added a run in the seventh, but it proved insufficient.
In the eighth, Cabuyaban launched a two-run homer, effectively sealing the win at 12-6.
Logan Brasel started on the mound for Northwest Missouri State, pitching 4.0 innings and striking out a season-high six batters while allowing six hits and two earned runs.
Jase Johnson followed with a 2-inning relief appearance, surrendering an earned run on two hits and collecting three strikeouts.
Diego De Santiago contributed one inning of work, giving up an earned run and striking out a pair, while
Brock Steggall closed the game with 2.0 scoreless innings with a strikeout. Overall, the pitching staff combined for 12 total strikeouts. It is the 11th time this season the Bearcat pitching staff has reached double figures in strikeouts in a game.
Frank Gall reached base four times and scored on all four occasions as she tallied a two-hit day. Cabuyaban made a strong impact by hitting a home run and driving in two runs while also scoring three times. Ventura contributed significantly with three hits and three RBIs, crossing the plate twice. Jimenez added a home run to his two hits and three RBIs, scoring twice. Connors posted two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs.
The series finale is set for Monday at 1 p.m. at the Bearcat Baseball Field.
