Bearcat volleyball runs roughshod over Tigers, 3-0

MARYVILLE, Mo. —  The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team took the Fort Hays State Tigers to the woodshed in a 3-0 sweep at Bearcat Arena.

The Bearcats made only five attack errors and hit a season-best .354 as a squad with three players reaching double-figure kill totals. Gabrielle Gartner led the way with 12 kills (.379). Sophia Gartner had 11 kills (.280) and Abby Bulthuis powered down 10 kills (.357). Chloee Hayes landed nine kills and hit .643 in the three-game sweep. Eva Plassmeyer posted seven total blocks with six kills while hitting .600.

Northwest won by set scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-17. Northwest moved its MIAA record to 4-3 and 7-10 overall. FHSU dropped to 14-8 overall and 3-5 in league matches.

The five attack errors rank as the third-lowest total in a match in program history. Northwest had four errors in a pair of matches in 2021 vs. Central Oklahoma and Purdue-Northwest.

Northwest led from 2-1 onward in the first set and finished by scoring six of the final seven points for a 25-15 win over Fort Hays State Earlier, Mya Karrick answered the opening point with a kill, then blocks involving Gabrielle Gartner with Ava Plassmeyer and Plassmeyer with Abby Bulthuis helped push the Bearcats ahead before Plassmeyer's kill made it 4-1. The home side kept building through the middle of the set, using kills from Sophia Gartner, Gabrielle Gartner, Bulthuis and Chloee Hayes along with repeated block pressure from Plassmeyer, Grace Thorne and Sophia Gartner to move from 8-6 to 19-14. Plassmeyer delivered back-to-back kills to start the closing stretch, Gabrielle Gartner followed with another, and Karrick assisted the final three kills by Sophia Gartner, Gabrielle Gartner and Bulthuis to close the set.

Northwest won the second set 25-14 behind two six-point scoring runs that created separation. After Fort Hays St. tied the set at 2-2, Gabrielle Gartner delivered three straight kills before Bulthuis, Hayes and an Ellery Luhring ace helped push the Bearcats ahead 8-2. Fort Hays St. got back to 8-4, but Northwest answered with another six-point stretch that included a Londyn Smith ace, a block by Hayes and Thorne, and kills from Bulthuis and Hayes to make it 14-4. Hayes and Sophia Gartner added points through the middle of the set as the Bearcats reached 21-8, and after Fort Hays State got to 23-14, an attack error and Thorne's kill from Smith closed the set.

Northwest turned a 1-0 deficit into a 7-1 lead in the third set, using a 7-0 response to take early separation on the way to a 25-17 set win. Sophia Gartner tied the set with a kill from Karrick, then Lily Zimmerman served six straight points that included a Gabrielle Gartner kill from Bulthuis, a team service ace, a Plassmeyer kill from Karrick and a block by Gabrielle Gartner and Plassmeyer. Fort Hays St. broke the run at 7-2, but Gabrielle Gartner answered with a kill from Karrick, and the Bearcats continued to add points through Hayes, Bulthuis, Sophia Gartner, Plassmeyer and Thorne. After FHSU scored consecutive points to make it 21-17, Northwest won the final four rallies, with Sophia Gartner recording three kills and Plassmeyer adding one to finish the set.
