Late-inning heroics lift Northwest past Lewis, 8-7

MANSFIELD, Texas — For the second straight game, Northwest Missouri State University's Kaylee Cords provided a walk-off hit to lift the Bearcats to an 8-7 win over the Lewis Flyers at the Lone Star D2 Classic.

The Bearcats trailed 7-5 with two outs in the ninth before Omara Love ripped a two-run single past first base and down the right field line. Cords followed with her second consecutive game-winning walk-off RBI as she plated Love for the go-ahead run. Cords was one of four Bearcats with a three-hit performance against the Flyers. Cords was joined in the three-hit effort by Alexis Brown, Love and Timber Wilson.

The relief work done by Erika Gore was scintillating as she scattered one hit over 3 2/3 innings to gain the win in the circle.

Northwest Missouri State secured the win with a three-run seventh inning, overcoming a two-run deficit to maintain their undefeated record. It marks the second 2-0 start in the five-year tenure of head coach Naomi Tellez, echoing the successful beginning to their 2024 season when they also achieved two victories.

Northwest Missouri State took an early lead against Lewis in the first inning. Mackenzie Mlnarik walked and stole second base before Omara Love singled up the middle, driving Mlnarik home. Love advanced to third on a passed ball, setting the stage for Timber Wilson's double to right center, which brought in Love and Kaylee Cords, who had walked earlier. The hosts led 3–0 after the first inning.

In the second inning, the Flyers responded, scoring four runs. Morgan Spodarek reached on a wild pitch after striking out, eventually scoring on another wild pitch. Ariana Trausch then tripled down the right field line, clearing the bases with three RBIs. Despite this surge, Northwest Missouri State added two runs in the bottom half, with Alexis Brown doubling, followed by RBI hits from Love and Cords, regaining a 5–4 advantage after the second inning.

Lewis added three more runs in the third and fourth innings, taking a 7–5 lead. However, Northwest Missouri State's defense held firm in the fifth and sixth innings, preventing further scoring by the Flyers.

The seventh inning proved decisive for Northwest Missouri State. Sara Farlow walked and was replaced by pinch runner Kiara Schaub, who advanced to third base. Omara Love's single down the right field line brought in Schaub and Mlnarik, tying the game. With Love on second, Kaylee Cords hit a walk-off double to deep right field, securing the comeback victory for Northwest Missouri State. The game concluded with an 8–7 win for Northwest Missouri State.

Olivia Moyer pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs while striking out five and walking two. Moyer's performance included throwing 82 pitches with 53 strikes and two wild pitches. Erika Gore relieved Moyer and pitched 3 2/3 innings, surrendering only one hit and no runs. Gore recorded two strikeouts and issued two walks, maintaining a strong ground ball presence with eight ground outs.

Alexis Brown recorded three hits, including a double, in five plate appearances and added a stolen base. Timber Wilson contributed with three hits and two RBIs, highlighted by two doubles. Omara Love delivered a standout performance, driving in four runs with three hits, including a double, while scoring three times. Kaylee Cords matched the offensive output with three hits and two RBIs, featuring a double in her efforts at the plate.

Northwest is 2-0 and will take on Oklahoma Baptist and St. Edwards's on Saturday at the Lone Star D2 Classic. Lewis is 0-2 on the season.
