TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 1-ranked Washburn Ichabods cruised past the Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball team Wednesday at Lee Arena, 94-44.
The Ichabods improved to 19-0 on the year and extended their home-court winning streak to 24 straight. Northwest dropped its fifth consecutive contest to fall to 9-11 overall and 2-7 in MIAA play.
Freshman
Robby Garcia led the Bearcat scorers with 10 points off the bench. Garcia also nabbed a team-high five rebounds. Senior
Aiden Gair made a three-pointer in his 23rd straight game.
Northwest began the first half with
Aiden Gair hitting a 3-pointer at 17:37 to momentarily close the gap. However, Washburn capitalized on turnovers, building a substantial lead through a 20-point advantage from turnovers. The Bearcats struggled with shooting, making just 6 of 24 field goal attempts and committing 14 turnovers. The half concluded with Washburn leading 40–14.
Northwest found some momentum early in the second half with a layup by
Jack Ratigan at 19:36, assisted by
Royce Williams. Walters contributed a 3-pointer at 17:13, briefly narrowing the gap. However, Washburn's defensive pressure, highlighted by 10 steals, limited the Bearcats' opportunities to sustain a run. Despite efforts like Abdul-Hamid's three-pointer at 11:47 and several timely rebounds, the Bearcats struggled with turnovers, committing 12 in the half. The game ended with Northwest Missouri State trailing 94–44, with Washburn's consistent scoring extending the lead.
Abdul-Hamid scored nine points, making all three of his 3-point attempts.
Robby Garcia posted 10 points and collected five rebounds. Walters contributed defensively with three steals while adding seven points.
The Bearcats will face off against Central Missouri on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. in Warrensburg, Mo.
