ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The No. 37-ranked Northwest Missouri State University women's tennis team claimed a share of the program's 14th all-time MIAA regular season title with a 5-2 road dual win over the Missouri Western Griffons Wednesday afternoon.
 

Head coach 
Mark Rosewell secured his 30th overall MIAA regular season title (14 women, 16 men) with the dual triumph over the Griffons. Northwest was projected to finish fifth in the preseason MIAA coaches poll.
 
Northwest is 13-7 overall and completes MIAA dual play at 8-1. Missouri Western is 4-12 overall and 1-8 in league dual action. Northwest improved to 43-9 all-time against Missouri Western in women's tennis.
 
The match began outdoors at the Noyes Tennis Courts, but was moved indoors during singles play because of rain in the St. Joseph area.
 
Northwest dazzled during doubles play and won all three matches to take a 1-0 lead in the dual. Northwest has captured the doubles point in nine consecutive dual matches. Northwest swept all three doubles matches for the fifth time this season.
 
Northwest's No. 1 duo of 
Marielena Muench and Cmilla Franzin were pushed to a 6-3 victory by MWSU's Cristina Granero Boj and Elena Ray. Northwest's No. 2 pairing of 
Miru Nonaka and 
Alva Norberg captured their eighth straight win with a 6-1 victory over MWSU's Celia Castano Malnero and Johanna Priedite. The Bearcat No. 3 doubles squad of 
Polina Gontaryk and 
Carolina Oliveira rolled to a 6-0 domination of MWSU's Ellie Messenger and Kyleigha Fenwick.
 
The Bearcats took a 2-0 lead in the dual when 
Camilla Franzin gained a 6-1, 6-1 win over MWSU's Kyleigha Fenwick at No. 6 singles.
 
The reigning MIAA player of the week 
Miru Nonaka rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against MWSU's Ellie Messenger at No. 5 singles to give Northwest a 3-0 lead. Nonaka won her fourth straight singles match to move her season mark to 14-6 overall and 13-5 this spring. Nonaka improved to 7-2 against MIAA foes.
 
MWSU's Celia Castano Malnero gave the Griffons their first point of the dual with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles over Northwest's 
Polina Gontaryk. Malnero won by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
 
The Griffons climbed one step closer when No. 27-ranked Cristina Granero Boj knocked off No. 30-ranked 
Marielena Muench at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
 
No. 60-ranked 
Alva Norberg gained the dual/MIAA-clinching triumph at No. 2 singles. Norberg landed a 6-3, 6-1 win over MWSU's Johanna Priedite. Norberg leads the team with 17 singles wins this year. Norberg is 15-5 in dual play and 7-2 against MIAA opponents.
 
Senior 
Carolina Oliveira added some icing on the cake with a three-set win at No. 4 singles over MWSU's Elena Ray. Oliveira won the first set, 6-4, but Ray came back to take the second, 6-2. Oliveira prevailed in the third-set super-tiebreaker, 10-8.
 
Northwest will now take part in the 2025 MIAA Tournament set for May 2-4 at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
