DURANT, Okla. - The Northwest Missouri State University men's tennis squad used some strong singles play to defeat the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm Tuesday in dual action.
The Bearcats snapped a five-match losing skid to improve to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in GAC/MIAA play. The Savage Storm fell to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in GAC/MIAA duals.
Southeastern Oklahoma State tallied wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead following the doubles competition. Northwest's No. 3 pairing of
Antonin Leborne and
Dominik Wijntjes picked up a 6-3 win. Leborne and Wijntjes are 5-1 at No. 3 doubles this spring.
The Bearcats had to rely on singles play to get the dual victory.
Rafal Bednarczuk posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Southeastern's Luis Ching at No. 1 singles.
No. 39-ranked
Dominik Wijntjes improved to 7-2 this spring with a straight-sets victory over Benjamin Fracassi at No. 2 singles. Wijntjes is 5-0 at No. 2 singles this spring.
Antonin Leborne notched his third straight singles win and moved to 7-1 this spring with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 5 singles over Djordje Kurcubic.
The deciding match in the dual came down to No. 6 singles. Northwest's
Niccolo Chiriatti battled to a three-set win over German Vallejo. Chiriatti took the match, 7-5, 6-7 (0-7), 6-3.
Northwest will return to action next Monday against Ottawa at 2 p.m. in Ottawa, Kan.
