Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bearcats tumble at home against Jets, 71-59

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball team suffered through a cold-shooting night and the Newman Jets scored a 71-59 win at Bearcat Arena.

Northwest went 3-for-25 from beyond the three-point arc as Newman scored its first win over the Bearcats since the Jets joined the MIAA. Newman improved to 15-12 overall and 8-10 in the MIAA. Northwest dropped to 6-21 overall and 4-14 in league play.

Ja'Vion Byers scored 13 of his team-high 17 points in the first half. Byers drained two triples in the first six minutes of the game as he kept the Bearcat offense going. Byers's bucket with 7:29 left in the opening half tied the contest at 17-17. However, Newman went on a 15-2 run which included an 11-point scoring spurt to take a 32-19 lead with 2:31 to play in the half. The Jets took a 36-23 advantage to the locker room.

The Bearcats went ice cold from three-point territory in the second half. Northwest missed all 12 of its second-half three-point attempts. Newman took its largest lead of the contest at 49-33 with 12:50 to play in the game. Northwest chewed into the lead by going on a 10-0 run fueled at the free throw line. A Luke Moustaskas bucket cut the lead to 49-43 with 10:51 left. Northwest went 9-of-13 at the line to eventually slice the lead to 51-46 with 9:12 remaining. Byron Alexander made a layup with 7:07 left to cut the lead to five again at 53-48.

The Jets were able to take off and took the lead back to double digits at 62-51 with 2:58 on the clock.

In the final 14 minutes of the game, Northwest made six field goals with two of them coming in the final minute of regulation from Jack Ratigan and Marcus Glock.

Glock narrowly missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Glock made all eight of his free throws, but could not get on track from distance as he misfired on all seven of his three-point attempts.

Moustaskas reached double-figure scoring with 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting.

Ratigan tallied six points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks off the bench.

Northwest will take to the court again Saturday in its regular season home finale against the Emporia State Hornets. Tip is set for 3:30 p.m. and the Bearcats will honor four seniors (Byron Alexander, Emorie Knox, Luke Moustakas and Spencer Schomers).
