ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball squad dropped a 99-77 decision to the Missouri Western Griffons Tuesday in the MIAA opener for both programs.
The Bearcats slipped to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in MIAA play.
The first half commenced with a back-and-forth exchange, as Northwest Missouri State utilized a strong presence in the paint to remain competitive.
Trey Moala contributed significantly with a layup and a tip-in, while
Royce Williams added a three-pointer to keep the visitors close. Despite their efforts, Missouri Western maintained a slight edge, capitalizing on perimeter shooting and ending the half with a three-pointer by Ty Henry. The half concluded with Northwest Missouri State trailing 46-39.
Northwest Mo. St. made an early push in the second half with
Larenz Walters hitting a 3-pointer at 19:05 and following it up with a layup at 16:16, reducing the deficit to 50–47. Despite these efforts, turnovers plagued the Bearcats, leading to several fastbreak opportunities for Missouri Western, who capitalized to extend their lead.
Aiden Gair contributed a 3-pointer and a layup, but Missouri Western maintained control, ending the half with a 99–77 victory, sealing the game.
Williams led the team with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, while also recording five steals and six rebounds. Walters contributed 16 points, making six field goals and adding one assist. Gair added 13 points, converting three of his four 3-point attempts, and recorded two assists. Moala finished with 10 points and collected six rebounds.
Looking ahead, Northwest Missouri State will host Emporia State in their next matchup. The game is set for Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Mo.
