Pitt State knocks off No. 23 Northwest, 1-0

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Northwest Missouri State women's soccer team fell to the Pittsburg State Gorillas, 1-0, at the Gorilla Soccer Pitch.
 
Northwest tilts to 10-4-0 overall and 7-2-0 in the MIAA, as Pittsburg State is now 11-2-2 overall and 6-1-2 in conference action. Northwest is now tied with Central Missouri for second place in the MIAA standings. 
 
The matchup between Northwest Missouri State and Pittsburg State began with both teams searching for an early breakthrough. Northwest's defense, led by goalkeeper Lily Ellis, successfully thwarted Pitt State's attempts, including a key save against Ella Cazzavillan in the 12th minute. This save contributed to Ellis's impressive season tally, bringing her to 76 saves. Lily Shaw tested Pitt State's defense twice, with shots on goal in the 15th and 22nd minutes, both stopped by Jocelyn Kramar.
 
As the half progressed, Northwest continued to press, earning a corner kick in the 22nd minute. Carly Hummell's shot near the end of the half narrowly missed, going over the top. Despite chances on both sides, the first half concluded with the score level at 0-0.
 
The second half began with PSU maintaining pressure, but Northwest held firm defensively. Ellis made a crucial save in the 47th minute to deny Mia Hunt. This performance not only added to her season total but also brought her career saves to 346, making her the 2nd-best in school history for career saves. 
 
Pitt State broke the deadlock in the 68th minute with a goal from Carrie Cunningham, assisted by Abby Hoffman. Northwest responded with attempts by Mackenzie Jordan and Ximena Arnau, both saved by Kramar. The half concluded with Shaw's effort that went off target, leaving Pitt State with a 1-0 victory.
 
Ellis recorded three saves for Northwest Missouri State, facing 16 shots over 90 minutes and conceding one goal. Shaw led the team with three shots, of which two were on target. Arnau and Jordan both contributed one shot on goal each during the match.
