HAYS, Kan. -- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team notched an 11-3 victory over the Fort Hays State University Tigers, sealing their second-straight MIAA series.
Senior
Casey Stalzer recorded a career-high in both strikeouts (13) and innings pitched (7).
Northwest wins its second-straight MIAA series as they improve to 17-19 overall and 9-13 in the MIAA. Fort Hays State drops to 20-16 overall and 8-14 in conference action.
Northwest struck quickly in the first with a lead-off single by
Cole Slibowski.
Ryan Williams then singled and advanced to second an error by the Tigers.
Alex Bowers drew a bases-loaded walk to give Northwest its first run of the game, holding a 1-0 lead after one.
For the second day in a row,
Jacob Selock crushed a solo shot to make it 2-0.
Trey Morris and
Kaehukai Young both hit back-to-back RBI singles to bring the score to 4-0 after two.
Morris continued his eight-game hitting streak, knocking in his third RBI of the day after he doubled down the left-field line to bring the score to 6-0 after the top half of the sixth.
Stalzer sat down three consecutive hitters in the home half of the sixth, registering a career-high 12 strikeouts at that point in the game.
Brady Miles hit a SAC fly to score Bowers in the seventh to increase Northwest's lead to 7-0.
Stalzer posted his fourth straight strikeout in the eighth to keep the score 7-0.
Morris hit his 50th RBI this season after knocking in Bodenhausen to make it 8-0. The next batter, Bowers, knocked in his fourth RBI of the day after a three-run moonshot to left to give the Cats a resounding 11-0 lead.
Fort Hays State kept the game intact with three runs in the eighth to make it 11-3.
Stalzer (4-3) ended his career-high outing with seven complete innings, four hits and 13 strikeouts.
Brock Steggall came in to close the door for Stalzer in the eighth as Northwest would take game two, 11-3.
Eight Bearcats recorded hits in the game, piling up 14 hits as a team.
Northwest will look for the series sweep against Fort Hays State tomorrow at noon.
