Selock's ninth-inning homer lifts Bearcats over Tigers, 3-2

HAYS, Kan. -- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team clinched a 3-2 win over the Fort Hays State University Tigers in the opening game of their three-game series.

Northwest improved to 16-19 overall and 8-13 in the MIAA, as Fort Hays State saw its overall record drop to 20-15 and 8-13 in conference action.

Cole Slibowski led the game off with a double down the right-field line to get the bats going early. Northwest loaded the bases in the top half of the first but couldn't push a run across.

Bearcat starter Quinn Mason shut down the Tiger offense through the game's first five innings, not allowing a hit.

Ryan Williams reached base on a walk, eventually breaking the scoring open 1-0 after he stole third and advanced home on a throwing error by the Tiger catcher.

Mason's hitless streak ended in the sixth when Fort Hays recorded its first hit. The Tigers tied the game back up at one after an RBI double by Brady Kreutzer.

After allowing a lead-off single in the home half of the seventh, Mason struck out the next three batters, giving him his sixth strikeout of the night.

Jake Ciafullo replaced Mason on the bump in the eighth. Mason went seven complete innings, allowed three hits and one run, and sat down six. Fort Hays broke the tie after a single through the left side. Northwest trailed 2-1 heading into the ninth.

Sam Wornson doubled down the left field line with one out in the inning, giving the Bearcats a runner-in-scoring position in the ninth. Jacob Selock entered the game in an 0-for-20 hitting slump and broke out big time with a clutch two-run homer to give Northwest a 3-2 lead.

Jacob Gajic came in for Ciafullo in the ninth. Gajic retired the only three hitters he faced to secure a 3-2 victory over Fort Hays in game one of the three-game set.

Ciafullo (2-2) was credited with the win as he went one inning, one hit and one earned run.

Selock (2), Wornson, Bowers, Morris, Williams, and Slibowski all tallied hits for Northwest.

Northwest and Fort Hays will return to the diamond tomorrow at 2 p.m. for game two.
