MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team took game three, 13-8, to clinch the series from the Northeastern State University RiverHawks.
Northwest improves to 19-26 overall and 11-19 in the MIAA. Northeastern State drops to 20-26 overall and 11-19 in conference action.
Northeastern State scored one in the top half of the first to take an early 1-0 lead.
Shortly after in the second, Northwest had a five-run answer.
Sam Wornson got the action started with a two-RBI single to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead.
Jacob Selock came up with the bases loaded and drove in another run on a fielder's choice.
Cole Slibowski collected his second hit of the afternoon, driving in a pair, giving Northwest a 5-1 advantage through two.
The RiverHawks scored one in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead.
Kaehukai Young gained a run back in the fifth after an error by the third baseman, bringing home
Ryan Williams.
Evan Tocmo led off the sixth inning with a four-pitch walk. Selock then ripped a double down the left-field line to stick runners on second and third with nobody out. Slibowski loaded the bases up after a hit-by-pitch, forcing a RiverHawk pitching change.
Chester Brooks drew another four-pitch walk to cut the Northwest deficit to one. Free bases kept rolling as Selock tied the game up at eight on a wild pitch.
Trey Morris got the job done as he hit a SAC fly to left to give the Bearcats a 9-8 lead. The Bearcats rounded off the sixth inning with five runs to take an 11-8 lead.
Jacob Gajic came in for
Jayme Fritts in the seventh. Gajic held the RiverHawks scoreless in the inning.
Morris doubled home Williams to tack on another run for Northwest in the ninth. Wornson added an insurance run with another RBI double to lead 13-8. Northwest would win game three by a score of 13-8, while also taking the series, 2-1.
Gajic collected his seventh save of the season, as he put up zeros in the final three innings of work. Fritts (1-0) was credited with the win. Northwest won game three by a score of 13-8, while also taking the series, 2-1.
Williams secured two walks today, solidifying his position as the record-holder for the most walks drawn in a single Northwest season, with a total of 46.
Wornson led the Bearcats offensively going 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Slibowski, Morris, and Selock all had multi-hit performances.
Northwest will play at Rockhurst on Tuesday at p.m. The Bearcats will also hit the road to Edmond, Okla., for a three-game weekend MIAA set with the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 26.
