MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University women's and men's tennis squads each recorded home dual wins Saturday over the Augustana Vikings.
The No. 17-ranked Bearcat women won a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 dual match against No. 32-ranked Augustana under the lights on the Grube Courts at the Rosewell Tennis Complex.Â
The No. 39-ranked Northwest men also claimed a 6-1 win over the Vikings.
WOMEN'S RECAP
The Northwest women gained their 20th win of the season for the 10th 20-win season in program history. The Bearcats trailed 3-1 but rallied to take the dual by winning the final three matches in singles play.
Augustana took a 1-0 lead in doubles by scoring wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Tessa Kwakernaak dropped the opening set to Augie's Senem Ocal at No. 2 singles. Kwakernaak fought back with a pair of triumphs in the second and third sets for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Laura Prieto Sieiro bounced back from only her second singles loss of the season Friday to gain her 20th singles win of the year. Prieto Sieiro gained a 7-6, 6-3 win over Augie's Mia Garcia at No. 4 singles.Â
Angela per Moreno posted a three-set win at No. 6 singles vs. Augie's Smilte Bakyte, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
With the dual square at 3-3, it would come down to the NO. 5 singles match between Northwest's
Marielena Muench and Augie's Gabriela Jancikova. Jancikova won the first set, 7-5, Muench bounced back and took the second, 6-3. Muench appeared in control with a 5-2 lead in the deciding set. However, Jancikova won four straight games to take a 6-5 lead. Muench would regain some momentum and forced a third-set tiebreaker. Muench and Jancikova battled for 18 points in the seven-point tiebreaker with Muench coming away with a dramatic 10-8 victory to clinch the dual win for the Bearcats.
MEN'S RECAP
The Bearcat men moved to 12-6 with a 6-1 win over the Vikings.
Northwest won the doubles point by taking all three of the doubles matches.
