Women's tennis nets 5-2 home win over Central Oklahoma

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The No. 19-ranked Northwest Missouri State University women's tennis team overcame a doubles deficit to tally a 5-2 dual win over the visiting Central Oklahoma Bronchos Saturday on the Grube Courts at the Rosewell Tennis Complex.

Northwest remained perfect in MIAA duals at 5-0 and won its ninth consecutive match to move to 19-1 overall. Central Oklahoma fell to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in MIAA duals.

UCO took a 1-0 lead by capturing doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Northwest's No. 2 doubles squad of Tessa Kwakernaak and Angela per Moreno did earn a 6-2 win.

Northwest turned the dual result around in singles action by taking five of the six contested matches. Carolina Oliveira put up a three-set win at No. 1 singles over UCO's Nefeli Zafeiri, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-2).

Kwakernaak went the distance at No. 2 singles against UCO's Pete Komada and recorded a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 Bearcat win. Kwakernaak is 14-5 in singles action this season.

Sofia Pignataro produced a straight-sets triumph at No. 3 singles over UCO's Blythe Buntrock, 6-1, 6-2. Pignataro is 15-9 in singles play this year.

Laura Prieto Sieiro gained a three-set victory at No. 5 singles against UCO's Anika Ouwejan, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Prieto Sieiro notched her 19th straight singles win and improved to 19-1 on the season. She is 15-0 at No. 5 singles this spring.

Per Moreno scored a 6-2, 6-0 victory over UCO's Ayaka Koga at No. 6 singles. Per Moreno won her sixth straight dual match and moved to 13-1 at No. 6 singles. She is 17-4 in singles play this season.

The Bearcats will return to play Thursday ih St. Joseph, Mo., against the Missouri Western Griffons. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. Northwest will be looking to gain its 10th 20-win season in program history.
