MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team dropped game two of its three-game series with Newman, 12-11.
Northwest's record drops to 17-24 overall and 9-17 in the MIAA. Newman improves 12-29 overall and 8-18 in conference play.
The Bearcats recorded seven extra-base hits in today's game, four of those being home runs.
Brady Miles (2),
Ryan Williams, and
Jacob Selock were all credited with round-trippers.
Newman led off the top half of the first with four runs on three hits to take an early 4-0 lead. Northwest would answer back with only one run in the bottom half when Williams drove in
Alex Bowers from third, making it 4-1.
The Jets would add two more in the second to take a 6-1 advantage. Chipping away, Miles launched a solo homer to left field to lead the 'Cats off in the bottom half of the second.
Cole Slibowski snuck one past the Jets' first baseman to score Bodenhausen from second. Later,
Trey Morris blooped a single over the shortstop's head to put up a five-spot in the second to only trail by one.
Miles hit his second lead-off homer of the game with another solo shot to tie it at six.
Williams gave the Bearcats its first lead of the afternoon on a two-run shot to left, bringing the score to 8-6 after four complete.
In the sixth,
Jaxon Meyer came in relief for Bearcat starter
Casey Stalzer. Stalzer went four complete, allowed seven hits, and sat down seven. The Jets scratched across five runs on four hits to take an 11-8 lead.
Wornson doubled in Young to cut the deficit to two runs in the seventh. Selock then blasted a two-run shot to tie the game back up at 11.
Jacob Gajic came in for Meyer (0-1) in the eighth. After a long delay in determining whether a runner advances to second or goes back to first, Newman successfully laid down a squeeze bunt to score the runner from third to take a 12-11 lead in the eighth.
Bowers led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to get things going for Northwest. Bowers later advanced to third with two outs. Both Young and Miles walked to load the bases to bring Wornson up to the plate. Wornson grounded out to shortstop to keep the 'Cats from scoring.
Northwest ended the top half of the ninth with a double play. Selock then tripled to right center to give Northwest a runner-in-scoring position with only one out in the inning. Slibowski and Bowers grounded out to secure a 12-11 victory for the Jets in game two.
Northwest dropped its series with Newman but will play the final game of the series starting tomorrow at 1 p.m.
