MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team dropped game one to the Newman University Jets, 7-5, in ten innings.
Northwest's record slips to 17-23 overall and 9-16 in the MIAA, as Newman improves to 11-29 overall and 7-18 in conference action.
Northwest took the early 1-0 lead after
Alex Bowers scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first.
It was a quiet second and third inning for both teams, as Newman answered back with a run in the fourth to tie the game back up at one apiece.
Noah Bodenhausen tripled down the right-field line, driving in
Brady Miles. The next batter,
Jacob Selock, blasted a stand-up double, inches away from clearing the wall to give the Cats a 3-1 lead in the fourth.
Jake Ciafullo came in relief for Bearcat starter
Quinn Mason. Mason threw 5.1 innings, allowed eight hits and five runs, and sat down five.
The Jets put up a four-spot in the top half of the sixth on five hits to lead 5-3.
Ryan Williams made it a one-run game in the seventh after he ripped a double down the right-field line to score Slibowski.
Kaehukai Young then singled to bring in Bowers to tie the game up at five.
Jacob Gajic made his 16th appearance of the season in the eighth. Gajic sat down two out of three hitters he faced to keep it 5-5.
Slibowski led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and was later advanced after an SAC bunt from Bowers. The Bearcats couldn't scratch a run as the game went into extra innings.
The Jets started the tenth with a solo shot, giving them a one-run advantage. Later in the inning, they scored another run on a bases-loaded walk to lead 7-5 heading into the home half of the tenth.
Northwest had bases loaded with one out in the bottom half of the tenth. Slibowski flew out to the second baseman, and Bowers hit a charge to left, but the Jets left fielder made the catch on the run to lift Newman over Northwest, 7-5 in ten innings.
Gajic (2-5) took the loss after three innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out two.
Northwest will return to the diamond for game two against the Jets tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Northwest will recognize head coach
Darin Loe with a pre-game ceremony Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. Loe has announced his retirement at the conclusion of this season after 25 years at the helm of the Bearcat baseball program.
