Baseball suffers 18-8 loss against William Jewell

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team dropped its midweek matchup with  William Jewell, 18-8. 

Northwest's record dips to 17-22 overall, while William Jewell improves to 17-15 overall.

William Jewell struck quickly in the opening frame with two runs on one hit to lead 2-0. 

Ryan Williams reached base on a throwing error by the Cardinal third basemen, giving Northwest its first base runner of the afternoon. Trey Morris ripped a double in the left-center gap to score Williams. The next hitter, Kaehukai Young, poked one down the right-field line to even the score at two. 

Williams gave the Bearcats the 3-2 lead on a solo shot to dead center. Morris followed Wililams' solo shot with a homer of his own to make it 4-2. Brady Miles put up Northwest's third round-tripper to cap off a four-run, five-hit third inning, leading 6-2. 

Fuga Yambe replaced Connor Polli on the hill in the fourth. The Cardinals would tack on seven runs on four hits, including a grand slam homer, to take a 9-6 lead. 

William Jewell took control of the game in the seventh after another grand slam by Will Brant, taking an 18-8 victory in seven innings. 

Garrett Stoll (0-1) took the loss.

Northwest will next play a three-game series with the Newman University Jets starting Friday, April 12. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

NOTES:
Morris went 2-for-4 from the plate with a homer...Williams went 1-for-2 with a homer and two walks...Miles tacked on a two-run shot...Young went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.
