MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University softball team split a doubleheader Saturday at home with the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers in the Bearcats' home opening-series.
Northwest captured a 4-1 win in game one before UNK scored a 3-2 triumph in game two.
Northwest is 10-10 overall and 1-1 in MIAA play.
GAME ONE
Bearcat starter
Breck Dickey struck out a career-high 14 batters and surpassed 400 career strikeouts in gaining the win. Dickey moved to 3-3 on the season and has struck out 408 batters as a Bearcat pitcher. Saturday marked her 32nd career win and 25th career complete game in the pitching circle. Dickey's previous career-high for strikeouts in a game came with 12 vs. Lincoln on April 29, 2023.
UNK got on the board in the top of the first with a single run. The Loper took advantage of a couple of walks to take the 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats were able to even it up in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from
Skylar Pieper that plated
Lillie Filger. Filger had doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a single from
Alexis Brown.
Northwest tallied back-to-back triples in the fifth from Filger and Brown to take a 2-1 lead. Pieper then knocked in Brown to take the Bearcat advantage to 3-1 with no outs in the inning.
Sophie Mayhugh delivered a one-out, RBI-single to center to score Pieper and make it a three-run contest at 4-1 through five innings of play.
Dickey didn't allow the Lopers to get any closer and Northwest claimed a 4-1 win.
GAME TWO
The Lopers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and added to its lead in the second inning with an RBI single off Bearcat starter
Jadyn Streigle.
Northwest evened it up in the bottom of the fifth when
Sophie Mayhugh singled to centerfield scoring
Alexis Brown and
Skylar Pieper.
The Lopers grabbed the lead in the top of the seventh after a defensive miscue by the Bearcats. The Lopers closed it out in the bottom of the seventh forcing a double play and a strikeout to end it with a 3-2 win for the visitors.
Northwest will return to action Sunday at noon with a doubleheader against Fort Hays State.
