MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University softball squad completed a doubleheader sweep of the Fort Hays State Tigers at the Bearcat Softball Field.
Northwest won by scores of 6-1 and 3-0. Northwest is 12-10 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA. FHSU dropped to 9-11 overall.
GAME ONE
The Bearcats relied on a trio of two-run homers and the arm of
Jadyn Streigle to take game one, 4-1.
Northwest scored first in the contest when
Sophie Mayhugh launched a two-run homer in the second to score
Abby Nolte.
The Bearcat duo of Nolte and Mayhugh did the same damage in the fourth. Nolte led off with a single and Mayhugh launched her second two-run homer of the day to give Northwest a 4-0 lead. Mayhugh came into the game with 103 career at-bats and no home runs.
The Tigers tallied a single run in the fifth on three hits and a sacrifice bunt to cut the Bearcat advantage to 4-1.
Northwest's
Lauren Gray crushed her own two-run home run in the sixth to stretch the lead to 6-1. Gray drove in Mayhugh, who had led off the inning with a walk. It was Gray's team-leading fifth home run of the season.
Starting pitcher
Jadyn Streigle tossed her fourth complete game of the season and improved to 4-4 as she limited the Tigers to one run. Streigle gave up five hits and struck out two without allowing a base on balls.
GAME TWO
Hayden Simmons and
Olivia Moyer combined for a five-hit shutout of the Tigers as Northwest completed a sweep, 3-0.
Skylar Pieper broke up a pitcher's duel with a two-out, solo home run in the fourth to give Northwest a 1-0 lead. Pieper's homer was Northwest's first hit of the second game.
The Bearcat manufactured a couple of runs in fifth.
Avery Mayberry drew a leadoff walk.
Gaige Pinkerton singled to right to put runners on first and second.
Lela Bryant put down a sacrifice bunt to move them into scoring position.
Annie Gahan delivered a sacrifice fly to center to score Mayberry.
Lillie Filger connected on a two-out, RBI-single to center to plate Pinkerton and give Northwest a 3-0 cushion.
Simmons worked six innings and allowed five hits and no runs to go with 11 strikeouts. Moyer pitched the seventh for a save. Moyer did not allow a hit and recorded two strikeouts.
