Tennis teams top Rockhurst in home action

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The nationally-ranked Northwest Missouri State University tennis teams enjoyed home dual victories over the Rockhurst University Hawks Friday afternoon on the Grube Courts at the Rosewell Tennis Complex.
 
The No. 27-ranked Northwest women moved to 14-1 in dual action with a 6-1 victory over Rockhurst. The No. 38-ranked Bearcat men improved to 9-4 on the season with a 6-1 triumph over the Hawks.
 
WOMEN'S RECAP
The Northwest women took a 1-0 lead in the dual by capturing all three doubles' matches. Northwest's top-seeded team of Carolina Oliveira and Sofia Pignataro started strong with a 6-0 win.
 
The Bearcats captured five of the six singles matches. Northwest won three singles matches in straight sets from No. 3 Sofia Pignataro, No. 4 Marielen Muench and No. 6 Angela per Moreno.
 
MEN'S RECAP
The Bearcats started slow as the Hawks were able to win the doubles' point by scoring wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Northwest's No. 28-ranked doubles squad of Vini Rodrigues and Andrea Zamurri scored a victory to stay perfect at 6-0 on the season.
 
Bearcat head coach Mark Rosewell had the Bearcats regroup and come out firing in singles play. The Bearcats went on to capture all six singles' matches to tally the 6-1 team win. Zamurri, ranked No. 28 in the nation in singles, posted a 6-2, 7-5 win over Rockhurst's Semyon Tsyrenov.
 
Northwest will face Washburn on Saturday in both women's and men's MIAA action. The Washburn women are ranked No. 9 in the nation and the Ichabod men are ranked No. 6 in the country.
