MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Sophomore
Trey Morris came through with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eleventh inning, sealing a 6-5 victory over No. 8 Missouri Southern in game one.
Northwest improves to 14-17 overall and 6-12 in the MIAA, as Missouri Southern drops to 27-7 overall and 14-4 in conference action.Â
Missouri Southern struck first in the opening frame with one run on two hits. Northwest answered back with an RBI double by
Ryan Williams, scoring
Noah Bodenhausen.Â
The Lions added three runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.Â
Kaehukai Young cut the Northwest deficit down to 4-2 after he roped a single up the middle as
Alex Bowers scored on an error by the Lion centerfielder.
Evan Tocmo crushed a two-run homer to left to knot the game back up at four after four complete.Â
Missouri Southern's starting pitcher Cole Gayman came into today's contest with a perfect 7-0 record with a 1.27 ERA. Northwest matched his season-high four earned runs through four innings.Â
Treghan Parker of Missouri Southern gave the Lions a 5-4 lead after an RBI single to center.Â
Brock Steggall relieved
Quinn Mason in the seventh. Mason completed six innings, allowed seven hits, and struck out six.Â
Northwest tied the game back up at five in the eighth as Tocmo reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Bowers to score on the throwing error by the Lion shortstop.
Northwest couldn't push a run across in the bottom of the ninth as the game went into extra innings.Â
In the eleventh inning,
Jake Emhardt began with a walk and later advanced on a wild pitch. Following that, Slibowski drew another walk, placing runners on first and second with no outs. Bodenhausen then singled to first, loading the bases with still no outs. Williams reached on a fielder's choice, resulting in Emhardt being thrown out at home. Morris then delivered a walk-off single, securing Northwest's 6-5 victory in eleven innings.
Steggall (3-1) went five innings, allowed three hits, and struck out six.Â
Northwest will return to the diamond for game two tomorrow at 2 p.m.Â
