Baseball falls short in 12-inning affair, 7-5

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team dropped game two with No. 8 Missouri Southern, 7-5, in a 12-inning contest.

Northwest drops to 14-18 overall and 6-13 in the MIAA. Missouri Southern improves to 28-7 overall and 15-4 in conference action.

Ryan Williams led the Bearcats going 3-for-3 with a double, a two-run homer, and two walks. Brady Miles went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a walk.

Noah Bodenhausen recorded Northwest's first hit of the afternoon with a single to center.

Williams led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double down the left-field line. Trey Morris then knocked in the first run of the game with an RBI ground out to shortstop, scoring Williams.

With two outs in the fifth, Williams crushed a two-run shot to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead.

Jake Ciafullo relieved Bearcat starter Casey Stalzer, who went 5 2/3 innings, allowed six hits, three earned runs, and recorded six strikeouts. Missouri Southern scored three runs on four hits to knot the game up at three after the top half of the sixth.

The Lions took the 4-3 lead in the top half of the seventh with a solo shot from Ryan Cline.

Miles came in the clutch after a double play by the Lion first basemen, driving in Bodenhauesn on a single down the left-field line.

Jacob Gajic came in to pitch for Ciafullo in the eighth. Back and forth, Missouri Southern regained the lead on a SAC fly. A 6-4-3 double play got Northwest out of the inning, trailing 5-4.

Williams drew a walk with two outs to give Northwest its first baserunner in the bottom of the ninth. Morris singled to move Diel, who pinch-ran for Williams, to second. Miles sent the game into extra innings, for the second day in a row, with an RBI single to knot the game back up at five.

The Bearcats were inching towards another walk-off victory in the tenth, as the Lion left-fielder fell, got back up, caught the fly ball, and threw Tocmo out at home to send the game into the eleventh inning.

Missouri Southern loaded the bases with nobody out in the eleventh. Gajic shut the Lion offense down, striking out two to retire the side, keeping the score at 5-5.

The Lions pushed two runs across in the twelfth inning to lead 7-5, eventually sealing the 12-inning victory.
