SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana Vikings scored a doubleheader sweep of the Northwest Missouri State University softball team Tuesday in non-conference action.
Augie won game one, 4-0, and tallied a 19-2 victory in the second game. The Vikings moved to 15-12 overall, while Northwest dipped to 14-14 on the season.
GAME ONE
Augustana starting pitcher Grace Glanzer tossed a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in a 4-0 victory.
Northwest's only hit in the game came on a one-out infield single in the first inning by
Alexis Brown. Brown was erased off the base paths on a double play.
Annie Gahan reached twice on errors, but was unable to reach second base on either occasion.
Bearcat starter
Olivia Moyer worked four innings and gave up five hits. She allowed two runs and struck out three batters.
Cassidy Paulson pitched the final two innings in the circle and gave up three hits and two runs.
Augie tallied two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to account for the game's scoring.
GAME TWO
Lillie Filger wasted no time in getting Northwest's first hit of the second game as she led off with a single through the left side. She swiped second and moved to third when Brown reached on a throwing error by Augie's third baseman.
Skylar Pieper reached on a fielder's choice that drove in Filger for the 1-0 Bearcat lead.
However, Augie answered quickly in the bottom half of the first. The first three Viking batters reached on two singles and a walk before Torri Chute cleared the bases with a grand slam down the left field line to put Augie on top, 4-1.
The Vikings touched up Bearcat starter
Hayden Simmons (4-1) for nine runs (seven earned) on six hits. Simmons left after five batters in the second. Reliever
Kylee Rockhold served up the second grand slam of the game to Chote that put the Vikings up 10-1. Augie added three more runs off Rockhold to push the advantage to 13-1 through two innings.
Avery Mayberry delivered a two-out, RBI-double to left center that plated Pieper for Northwest's second run of the game in the third.
Breck Dickey came on to face the third batter in the third inning to close the book on Rockhold. Rockhold tossed 29 pitches in one inning of work. She allowed six hits and six runs (four earned). Dickey got out of the third with the Bearcats on the short end of a 16-2 score.
The Vikings added three runs in the bottom of the fourth, which included the third homer of the game for Chute, to increase their advantage to 19-2. Chute went 4-for-4 with a double, three homers and 10 RBI.
Northwest will hit the road for weekend action this week for a Friday doubleheader at Newman (1 p.m. and 3 p.m.) and a Saturday doubleheader against No. 9-ranked Central Oklahoma (Noon and 2 p.m.).
