WICHITA, Kan. – The Northwest Missouri State University softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of the Newman Jets Friday at the NU Softball Field.

Northwest won game one in six innings, 10-1, and followed it up with a 5-2 triumph in game two. Northwest is 16-14 overall and 5-1 in MIAA play. Newman dips to 13-17 overall and 1-5 in league action.

GAME ONE
Lillie Filger tallied her seventh three-hit game of the season and 10th of her career in leading the Bearcats to a 10-1, six-inning victory in the opening game of the doubleheader. It was the fourth time this season the Bearcats have scored 10 or more runs in a game.

Filger led off the contest with a triple to left. She scored on a sacrifice fly from Alexis Brown to put Northwest on top, 1-0.

The Bearcats added two runs in the second. Lauren Gray drew a walk to begin the inning. Abby Nolte reached on an error and then Nolte and Gray moved up on a Lela Bryant sacrifice bunt. Annie Gahan delivered a run-scoring infield single to second to plate Gray. Filger ripped an RBI-double to right to score Nolte and give Northwest a 3-0 advantage.

The Jets put up their first run of the game in the bottom of the third as they took advantage of two hits and a walk off Bearcat starter Jadyn Streigle.

Northwest opened things up with a five-run rally in the top of the fifth. Filger led off with her third hit of the game, a single to left field. Brown followed with a single. Skylar Pieper was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Avery Mayberry tallied an RBI-groundout to score Filger. Sophie Mayhugh notched a two-run single to right center to score both Brown and Pieper. Cora Schweitzer pinch ran for Mayhugh. Gray was credited with an RBI-double to left that allowed Schweitzer to race home. The Bearcats final run of the inning came on a bases loaded walk to Gahan that pushed Gray across the plate.

Pieper reached on an error to lead off the sixth inning for the Bearcats. Mayberry singled to right-center, which allowed Pieper to move up to third. Mayhugh produced an RBI-single to left field to score Pieper and give Northwest a 9-1 advantage. Gray followed with her own RBI-single to left-center as Mayberry scored to allow the Bearcats to reach double-figures in runs.

Streigle allowed one run in five innings of work in gaining the win. Streigle struck out three and walked two as she scattered seven hits. Streigle moved to 6-5 on the season and captured her 19th career win.

Hayden Simmons pitched the sixth and struck out all three batters she faced to close out the 10-1 victory.

Filger went 3-for-4 with a triple, double and single to go along with an RBI. Mayhugh went 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBI. Filger, Pieper and Gray each scored two runs in the win.

GAME TWO
Abby Nolte hammered a pair of solo home runs and Olivia Moyer pitched a shutout ball into the sixth inning as the Bearcats completed a sweep with a 5-2 win over the Jets.

Northwest broke up a scoreless tie with a two-run effort in the third inning. Annie Gahan singled with one out and moved up to second on a groundout by Lillie Filger. Alexis Brown knocked in Gahan with an RBI single. Brown, who had moved up to second on a throw, was able to score on a Skylar Pieper single to right. Pieper advanced to third on a passed ball but was left stranded at third when Sophie Mayhugh grounded out to third to end the inning.

Abby Nolte led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left field for a 3-0 advantage. The Bearcats added another insurance run in the sixth as Filger reached on a single and moved up to second on her seventh stolen base of the season. Filger advanced to third when Alexis Brown singled to shortstop. Pieper came through with a two-out, RBI-double to center to send Filger across the plate to give Northwest a 4-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Olivia Moyer cruised through the first five innings as she allowed two hits. Moyer was relieved in the sixth after she gave up a single and two walks. The Jets were able to tally two runs against Moyer. Hayden Simmons came on in relief of Moyer and got the Bearcats out of the sixth with a 4-2 lead. Moyer got the win to move to 3-2 on the year.

Nolte connected on her second homer of the game with a solo blast to left with two outs in the seventh. Nolte's round-tripper put Northwest on top, 5-2.
