MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball squad trounced the Missouri Western State University Griffons 12-4 in game two of a three-game series.
The Bearcats improved to 10-14 overall and 3-9 in MIAA action. The Griffons fell to 12-12 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
The Bearcats notched three runs in the top half thanks to a
Trey Morris two-RBI single. Later in the inning, Freshman
Sam Wornson singled home Morris to give the 'Cats a 3-0 lead after one.
In the third, Missouri Western got a run back in the top half. Northwest returned the favor with two runs in the bottom half as Wornson notched his second RBI of the day with a SAC fly to center, scoring Morris. The 'Cats took a 5-1 lead after
Noah Bodenhausen singled to left, bringing in
Brady Miles.
Northwest broke the game open in the fifth, scoring five runs on only two hits.
The Griffons got two runs back in the eighth but were quickly answered by Northwest with two of its own. The Bearcats led 12-3 heading into the ninth inning.
Casey Stalzer (3-2) was credited with the win as he worked six innings and gave up five hits while only allowing one earned run. Stalzer sat down eight Griffon batters.
Jaxon Meyer came in for Stalzer in the seventh and worked two innings, allowing four hits and striking out two.
George Fisher closed out the game in the ninth, giving up two hits and striking out one.
The Bearcats and Griffons will wrap up their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
