MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team dropped its final game with Missouri Western, 10-8, but won its first conference series of the season.
Northwest drops to 10-15 overall and 3-10 in MIAA action. Missouri Western improves to 13-12 overall and 5-8 in conference play.
Missouri Western took a 1-0 lead after the first inning off back-to-back doubles. Northwest was unable to capitalize in the bottom half after
Cole Slibowski was hit by a pitch and stole second to lead off the inning.
Northwest eventually answered back in the second with
Sam Wornson stealing second and
Parker Griffith scoring on the throw down. Wornson advanced to third on the error, allowing him to score on a wild pitch. The Bearcats took a 3-0 lead after the Griffon catcher committed his second error of the inning.
The Griffons took a 5-3 lead with four runs on four hits in the top half of the fourth.
Brock Steggall came in for starter
Andrew Clark in the fifth. Clark went four innings, giving up seven hits and five earned runs.
Northwest recorded its first hit in the sixth with a double by
Alex Bowers.
Another pitching change for the 'Cats came in the sixth, as
Jacob Gajic was brought in. Gajic worked three innings, allowing four hits and three runs.
Missouri Western made it a 9-3 ballgame with two more runs in the eighth.
Northwest had something brewing in the bottom half of the eighth with
Caden Diel reaching on another error.
Ryan Williams roped an RBI single to center to cut the deficit to 9-4. The 'Cats had two runners on with no outs but wasn't able to get anything else.
The Bearcats put up a fight in the ninth when Bodenhausen singled, followed by an RBI double by
Jacob Selock.
Brady Miles singled home two more runners to cut the deficit to 10-7. Bowers then roped a single to center to drive in another run to bring the winning run up to the plate. Wornson struck out to end the game, 10-8.
Clark (0-4) took the loss, as Sam Kratz of Missouri Western was credited with the win.
Northwest will be back in action on Tuesday, March 19 at 3 p.m., for a non-conference clash with Rockhurst.
