The Southern Arkansas University Mulerider tennis teams were able to edge the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats in women's and men's action on Tuesday afternoon in Magnolia, Ark.
The No. 15-ranked SAU women improved to 11-1 in handing the No. 25 Bearcats their first loss of the spring. The Bearcats are 10-1.
The No. 25-ranked SAU men edged the No. 25-ranked Bearcats, 4-3. Northwest is 5-4 on the season.
The Bearcat women earned the doubles points with wins at No. 2 doubles from
Tessa Kwakernaak and
Angela per Moreno and a triumph at No. 3 doubles from
Laura Prieto Sieiro and
Marielena Muench. The SAU women gained four victories in singles to clinch the victory.
The Northwest men were in a battle with the Muleriders that came down to the final two singles matches. Northwest won the doubles point with wins from
Michael Delebois and
Fillippo Piranomonte at No. 1 doubles and
Mason Meier and
Martin Sanchez at No. 3 doubles.
No. 37-ranked
Andrea Zamurri knocked off No. 64-ranked Tim Fischer at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0). Meier earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over SAU's Mathys Pinoit at No. 3 singles.
The Muleriders rallied with wins late at No. 4 singles in a three-set match. SAU's Fropde Neumann withstood Delebois, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. SAU's Pierre Copin edged Piranomonte, 6-2, 7-5 to clinch the triumph for the home squad.
