FORT SMITH, Ark. - The Northwest Missouri State University women's and men's tennis teams each recorded dual victories over the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith on Wednesday afternoon.
The No. 34-ranked Bearcat women gained a 4-0 sweep, while the No. 34-ranked Northwest men had to battle for a 4-2 decision. The win improves the Bearcat women's dual mark to 11-1 this spring.
For the ninth time in 12 duals, the Bearcat women captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats got wins at No. 2 doubles from
Angela per Moreno and
Tessa Kwakernaak and at No. 3 doubles from
Laura Prieto Sieiro and
Marielena Muench.
The women were able to capitalize on singles wins from No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 slots. Muench won a 6-1, 6-1 match at No. 4. Prieto Sieiro, the MIAA women's tennis athlete of the week, garnered a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles to move to 9-0 in dual action. Per Moreno eased into a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles to clinch the triumph.
The men had more of a tussle with the Lions before securing a 4-2 win and moving its spring record to 6-4 overall. Northwest gained the upper-hand by earning the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The No. 33-ranked team of
Andrea Zamurri and
Vini Rodrigues scored a 7-5 win, while No. 50-ranked
Mason Meier and
Martin Sanchez secured a 6-3 victory.
Zamurri collected his 69th career singles win at the No. 1 slot with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Anis Ramchane.
Michael Delebois slipped past Killian Darneaux at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 7-5. Sanchez had the clinching match at No. 6 singles when he pulled out a three-set win over Kevin Praphan, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The Bearcats will be back in action at home Friday against Southeastern Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. at the Grube Courts/Rosewell Complex.
